Beauty Talk: Masks

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

My skin has never, ever been perfect. Every since puberty happened my skin has been going crazy!! It's so annoying and that has left me with trying a lot of products. My latest skin craze is masks. I have been trying to take care of my skin more and I have been doing masks every week. I do one every other day. I have just started to do this for about 2 weeks. So I have yet to notice a difference. Anyway, so I bought some new masks.....

My esthetician back in San Diego gave me a facial and used a pumpkin mask. I really liked it. My skin was sooo clear afterwards. I decided to purchase one and I have only used it twice. It burns! But, like, the good kind of burn. The kind of burn that you KNOW its doing something good to your skin. I like.

I have never used a volcanic clay mask but I heard good things. I have only used this one once and so far I like it. This one also burns. More than the pumpkin one. Whew!

As far as the Rodial mask, I got that one a while ago. I dont want my skin to be white! I bought it because i have really bad hyperpigmentation on one side of my face and I have acne scars that just will not go away. I just started using this one also and let's hope that it fades them a bit.

I know this is kind of a rigorous routine that I have going on but my skin is one tough cookie and I am ready to fight back!

oh yea!

Vegetarian Chorizo and Potatoes Recipe

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Since we have moved from San Diego to Chicago the amount of GOOD mexican food restaurants is slim pickens. I have not found a good, authentic mexican restaurant that has me raving about it. It's even HARDER to find a vegetarian/vegan mexican place. OMG, so hard! If any of you are in the Chicago area and know of one, please please please let me know!

With the amount of mediocre restaurants around here, I am left with lots of cooking. Like, a lot of it! We rarely go out to eat anymore. So these days i'm cooking up a storm in my kitchen. Today, I wanted to share with you a yummy vegetarian dish. I grew up eating chorizo with potatoes and it's soooo yummy! but since I do not eat meat, I am left craving this dish in particular. This dish can be made with regular chorizo but I used the Soy kind. Here is what you will need

about 4-5 large russet potatoes
Peanut oil
Soy chorizo link
Salt
Pepper

peel and cut your potatoes to how you like them. I cubed mine to medium size. Add peanut oil in large, deep pan. You can use as much or as little as you like but keep in mind that they potatoes need to fry a little bit. Once the oil is heated, place your potatoes in there and add salt and pepper. I like to use coarse sea salt on almost all my dishes.
Let your potatoes cook for about 10-15 minutes uncovered. Please note that in order for your potatoes NOT to  become MASHED, it is important not to stir too much. Just let them do their thing. So after those 15 minutes, cover them for about 20 minutes. More or less depending on how crispy you want them. I personally like mine to be on the crispy side so I let mine get a bit crispy. Once they are just about cooked, add the soy chorizo link in there. Let that cook for about 10-15 minutes and make sure that all the potatoes are covered in it. It doesn't take that long to cook but, again, I like my potatoes to be somewhat crispy. So once you are done you can serve them as is or make a quesadilla with them or just eat them in a taco. I ate mine with black beans (homemade) and it was muy delicioso!

About THIS much of oil

I only use peanut oil for cooking potatoes.

source. I forgot to take a picture of the soyrizo! luckily, I found the exact one I used. From Trader Joe's

Crispey! (cool points if you know where that is from...)

done!

You can add anything that you want. Cheese, parsley, cilantro, onions. Anything that you want but I don't like to venture out much. hehe...
P.S. these are really good as next day leftovers!

Homemade Applesauce

So, back in the day, I did not even care if the stuff that I ate was natural or not. I didn't care if it was organic, fresh, animal, artificial or anything like that. I know, it's so sad to think about that. Now, I try to feed my son all natural, organic and ACTUAL food not products that are supposed to taste like food. There are so many fake food products out there, it's scary! I want the best of the best for my child (what mom doesn't) So with that being said, I made homemade apple sauce today! it turned out pretty tasty. Here's what I used....

about 15 small pink lady apples
1/4 tsp cinammon
1/4 c. dark brown sugar (more or less to YOUR liking)

You can use any other products you like. There are some recipes out there that you can add vanilla and stevia instead of sugar. For now, I made this with the stuff that I had on hand. I SOOO did NOT want to make a trip to the grocery store. Especially with a cranky-because-I-didnt-take-a-nap kiddo.

Ok, so I peeled, cored and chopped up the apples to my liking. Then I filled up a pot with water, just covering the apples. I turned up the heat to medium-high and brought them to a boil. Once boiling, I turned it down to a simmer for 10 minutes. I added the sugar and cinnamon and let simmer for another 5 minutes. Your house will smell divine after that step is done!
I put the apples plus a cup or so of water (from pot) in the blender and I alternated between the pulse setting and the low setting. Once it was done to the texture that I liked, I put them in mason jars. Voila! you're done.

The real taste test here is if mr. little dude will like it :)

I got this simple and super easy recipe from here.
